Urban Legend Michael Ripple

Well, it finally happened. Apparently I've achieved a new level of notoriety... Urban Legend. It was told to me today that 'someone's son told their son...(removed by at least 3 degrees of relation)...that the man that lives in the big house across from the pond... 'use to be a priest, but now he is an atheist and hates all catholics' 'he lives alone all by himself in the big house across the pond' Wow.

Our Lady of Guadalupe through My Years...

Image
So in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe I leave you with a scattering of images and some connections from my life. This is a actual size replica of the St. Juan Diego's  tilma.  It is printed on a canvas.  I picked it up when I was on a 72 hour pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City in 1993.  I had no idea about the story---I remember the owners of a Mexican restaurant near my parish helped me get a room at the rectory for the priests of the shrine.    It was here that she left a mark on my soul... This is in a glass shadow box....with some stuff from Medugorje...given to me by a priest while in Guadalupe...his name was Gabriel...yep he gave me, Michael, this image...Later I gave this image to my yet-to-be wife as a little gift.  And...(yep again)...it really never left my presence since we soon married. This is a little fun image I found in San Miguel de Allende while I was readying to write A Lost Shepherd. Very cool...

What a Ride

Image
So it has been a while. Much has happened. All Grace.... And what a ride it has been! I began my sabbatical about year ago. I shut down most of my social media connections--twitter, Facebook, and even stepped away from blogging..then.... I traveled to Rome and made a few side pilgrimages. I climbed mountains in Utah I played in rock n roll concerts with my son. I spent time listening...really listening. I read some, prayed some more, and even did some gardening. I fretted over the state of the world and the sins and evils. I prayed. I let my hair grow (what's left of it) and finally( taking my wife's suggestion) --cut my beard. I started a new job...then ended up having a full summer of being a Dad, Husband, Son--and Uncle. I tried to grow organic things in the garden and remodeled a basement. nnnnnervous dad snow in Utah I prayed some more and then would think about writing. ...about finishing a children's book....about maybe ...

The Last Day in Italy---an observation

Though I have been home for a few days (attempting to track lost luggage), I have one scene which recurs and I find it somewhat humorous. Those of you who know me are aware of my sensitivity to clericalism and the many masked forms it takes. Well, here is how it happened. I was shopping at the religious goods store at the Vatican (Savelli).  Two ladies who worked there were interested in helping me--it went something like this (add appropriate accents)... "Yes, may I assist you?" I kept looking at the fine jewelry in the case, "Yes, thanks I am looking for some earrings for my wife." "Oh, how nice.  They are over here."  She walked to different counter where another store employee, a lady was standing.  In Italian she shared with the second lady that I was looking for some earrings for my wife--to which the lady smiled and said, "Yes, that is so nice.  I can help you, just a minute please." I stood by the counter while she finished waiti...

It's Obvious

We left Rome immediately following the canonizations of ss John Paul II and John XXIII.   It was not an easy achievement.   Millions of people were cramming onto buses, subways, and trains...and I was one of them. In the end we arrived at Tiburtina station, boarded another bus and journeyed to Sulmona (home of my friends family and also Ovid). While there his gracious cousins drove us to the Santuario del Volto Santo...where the shroud relic is the image of the face of Christ...God is always painting pictures for us.  I arrived in time for Mass. Later in the day we trekked to a Greek church of Our Lady, again high atop a mountain and remote.  There were over 75 icons.  It was a day spent in the midst of images. After a quick visit to Rocco Pia and a coffee it was back to Sulmona where it seemed we were eating all the time! The next day I happened upon Eucharistic Adoration across the narrow street and then onto Prescara...but first a very important stop. S...

Beatification...an unexpected but perfect view

I awoke early this morning on Divine Mercy Sunday...the day of Beatification of John XXIII and John Paul II.   I headed towards the Vatican...knowing I wouldn't get too far.  Within one mile I hit a road block of humanity.   I could get no further than the far side of the castle de Angelo .   I watched as valiant men from all nations held their flags high and forged onward...like A civil war general leading the charge at Gettysburg.  With courage and valor they met the pointy elbows of  little Italian women...and fell. I had enough.  I grabbed a free bottle of water, turned and swam upstream. Nothing new to my life. I arrived at Mary Queen of Apostles church in time for Holy Eucharist. I knelt, prayed and offered intentions. I went to my room, turned on the tv and watched the liturgy happening blocks away. My wife and I conversed via text as she watched in the states.   Bells tolled in the city announcing the moment in time. It was th...

My Trip to Collevalenza

First I need to preface this entry... It is a packed entry because it was a packed day. For now just some simple moments and experiences. It began with my lovely wife reminding me of past spiritual experiences and connections and that I wasn't far from Collevalenza. "So you better go!" , she texted me. I awoke at 5:30 to start the pilgrimage.  A subway and a 2 hour bus ride then a shuttle through the hills fog and rain. I was a stranger in a strange land.   In the middle of Italy... clinging to forgotten Latin in order to make sure I was going to arrive  where I felt called to be.  Here are the moments on which I will later elaborate .....I knew very little of the story of the place. .....I knew it had to do with sister named Madre Speranza. ....who I never heard of until a chance dream and a discussion with a friend in Medjugorje ...almost eight years ago ....I arrive and aimlessly wander amount hundreds of people, finally meeting the only man who spok...

Assisi

Image
A subway, a train and a bus....and I ended up in Assisi.  For years I have heard, "You will love it there.  It is so quiet and peaceful." Really? Well, talking to a shop owner today...he said the crowds reminded him of when Pope Francis came through.  I learned that this is not the time to come to Rome or Assisi! I still prayed.  I knelt in a little stone church built by the hands of St Francis.  It sat within the Basilica.  It was good to pray in a place where a saint communed with the Almighty. I walked the hills and grasses, the cobblestones, and the stairs.  I prayed before the famed Crucifix and walked on the spot where Francis returned his belongings to his father.  Of course Our Lady of Medjugorje was present throughout the town...from posters to pendants. It is all so very connected.   I would write more, and I will.... however I must ready for another day of pilgrimage.  This time to a place my lovely wife reminded...
